My solar installer went out of business: what to do

Disclaimer: This is general information, not legal or financial advice. Your contract, lender, and state rules decide your options. Consider a licensed attorney for disputes.

1. Check the system is still producing

An installer's bankruptcy does not switch your system off. Look at your inverter screen or monitoring app and note lifetime kWh.

2. Figure out who owns the system

  • Cash or loan: you own it. Your loan stays with the lender, not the installer. Keep paying and keep records.
  • Lease or PPA: a finance company owns it and is usually responsible for service. Look at who sends your bill. Examples: SunPower leases → SunStrong; Sunnova → SunStrong; PosiGen → Renewbrook.

3. Gather your paperwork

  • Contract / installation agreement and any warranty documents
  • Equipment brands and serial numbers (panels, inverters, battery)
  • Permission to Operate letter from your utility
  • Monitoring login, photos of equipment labels
  • Loan or lease statements

4. Get monitoring back

Use your brand guide: Enphase and SolarEdge both have homeowner ownership-transfer processes.

5. Separate the warranties

  • Manufacturer warranties (panels, inverters, batteries) are from the equipment maker and generally survive; labor may not be covered.
  • Workmanship / production guarantees came from the installer and are usually lost in a liquidation, unless a successor took them on (check your installer's page).

6. Check the bankruptcy case

If you are owed money or work, the court case site lists claim deadlines. Many deadlines have passed; check your installer's page for links.

7. Find a qualified repair company

See repair companies by state. Verify the contractor's license with your state board and get a written quote.

8. Report problems

Your state attorney general's consumer protection office takes complaints about solar companies.
